The challenge

An open car park is outdoors in all but name: driving rain, road salt on tyres and condensation all reach the steel. The developer wanted an exposed steel frame in anthracite with 60 minutes of fire resistance, and a finish that still looks good to visitors years from now.

Our approach

Standard water-based intumescent is made for dry interiors, so we built the system around an exterior-grade topcoat that seals it against moisture. Columns and beams were blasted, primed and coated in our hall, with the thickness set per section. We matched the topcoat to the architect’s colour sample before production started, and protected every finished member with spacers and wrapping during transport.

The result

The frame for all six levels was erected in five weeks. With the colour coat already on, the architect got the exposed-steel look without any painting on site.
